The importance of authenticity in your work
And the strength of Vaern’s business model
Lisbeth Loft is a security consultant at Vaern. Her background is in applied research, and she holds PhDs in demography and statistics as well as sociology. She has worked with some of the world’s leading universities and has also held a number of project-based roles as a senior consultant at the Danish Ministry of Children and Education.
Drawing on extensive experience in cross-disciplinary work and leadership, Lisbeth often acts as a bridge between different perspectives, with a strong focus on the practical implementation of risk management and embedding it into organisational culture.
At Vaern, she works with organisations and businesses to improve their approach to risk management, including through better use of data, analysis of decision-making structures and the development of new diagnostic tools. Here, she talks about the importance of authenticity, the strength of Vaern’s business model and why she enjoys getting older.
When did you realise you were good at what you do?
When I was awarded a Marie Curie Global Fellowship, a highly prestigious international research fellowship funded by the EU. My application ranked in the top 1% across all scientific disciplines and participating countries. That is not too bad, as we would say in Jutland.
My project focused on integrating new and complex data into social science and agent-based analytical models. The knowledge I gained through that project is one of the things I now want to apply to strengthening security in businesses and organisations.
What has surprised you most about yourself throughout your career?
I have been surprised by how much I enjoy getting older, both professionally and personally. I have reached an age where many people are reluctant to say how old they are. I do not feel that way at all. I see it as a privilege to get another year older. I appreciate life and everything I continue to learn along the way.
Experience has taught me to feel more confident in my decisions, and it has shown me the value of bringing personal perspectives into my work. When I was younger, I sometimes found it difficult to look beyond the specific task in front of me.
I am still ambitious and have high standards for the quality of my work. But today, I have a much stronger appreciation of the human perspective and how important it is to take that into account while still delivering effectively. That is an important skill.

consultant's perspective
“When it comes to risk management, we cannot simply roll out standardised, off-the-shelf solutions one after another. We need to explore each organisation and identify where the real challenges lie, so we can address them effectively and develop solutions that will continue to work over time.”

Senior Compliance Advisor, Vaern
Why did you choose to work with Vaern?
There are two things in particular that I have found at Vaern that I have not seen elsewhere.
The first is the opportunity to exchange ideas with highly skilled colleagues. From the very first meeting, it was clear that this was a group of people who, like me, care deeply about their work, aim for the highest quality and are open to the opportunities for development that come with new ideas and perspectives.
The second is the business model. I had wanted to work independently for a long time, but I came from a professional environment where the opportunities to do so were limited. Vaern offered exactly the right balance: the independence I was looking for while still allowing me to be an active part of a highly engaged and capable team.
What was your first impression of Vaern?
I immediately felt that I belonged, even though I do not have the typical background of a security consultant.
It mattered to me that Vaern was able to see beyond an impressive CV and recognise the person and the potential behind it. That kind of openness says a lot about the culture here.
One principle I strongly believe in is that we should design systems around the people who actually need to work with them. To me, risk management is fundamentally about people, which is why I always try to understand the individuals, relationships and situations involved in my work.
From the very beginning, I sensed that those perspectives were equally important at Vaern.
What does it take to become a good security consultant at Vaern?
I think authenticity plays a major role.
When you design and deliver solutions that will have a significant impact on the organisations and businesses we work with, originality matters. By that, I mean staying true to established knowledge, drawing on your own experience and understanding what the client actually needs.
When it comes to risk management, we cannot simply roll out standardised, off-the-shelf solutions one after another. We need to explore each organisation and identify where the real challenges lie, so we can address them effectively and develop solutions that will continue to work over time.
